短く答えるなら「両方正しい」となります。長く答えると一冊の本になります。結論から言うと、聖書自体が一つの答えを示していません。複数の読み方が並存しています。多くの研究者は比喩的な表現として理解しています。文字通りに読む立場も少数ながらあります。

Worth adding: a non-canonical text treats the same theme and the comparison is illuminating. Traditions answer this very differently, so ask in your own community too.
In my experience the practice changes before the understanding does.
